A creative collaboration between schools brings storytelling, wellbeing and imagination together to inspire young learners

Pupils from across the Moorland Federation recently took part in an engaging and imaginative Crystal Kingdom workshop, delivered in collaboration with students from Minehead Middle School. The session brought together storytelling, emotional development and peer collaboration, creating a rich and memorable learning experience for all involved.

The workshop was centred around The Magical Secret of the Crystal Kingdom, a story that transports children into a world where they can become unicorns, dragons or horses. While the narrative is full of adventure, humour and fantasy, its deeper purpose is rooted in supporting children’s emotional wellbeing. Through the journey, pupils explore themes of resilience, self-belief and managing emotions, learning that the real magic lies not in what they become, but in what they discover about themselves.

The session began with middle school pupils confidently reading the opening chapter to KS2 children, modelling fluency and expression while helping to build excitement around the story. This was followed by thoughtful discussion, where pupils shared predictions, made connections to other texts and reflected on the themes emerging from the story.

Each child then received a carefully prepared box containing their own copy of the book, colouring pencils, a themed card game and a bag of crystals. Using their books, pupils worked collaboratively to answer questions set by the Minehead Middle School students, encouraging both comprehension skills and peer-led learning.

The experience extended beyond the classroom, with every child taking their box home to continue exploring the story and its messages with their families. The impact of the workshop was clear, with parents sharing overwhelmingly positive feedback:

“I wanted to share that F came home absolutely buzzing after the visit from the Crystal Kingdom — he was so excited. Thank you to the school for organising the visit! We played the game lots last night, he was very keen.”
“Absolutely love the Crystal Kingdom project A came home with today. What a wonderful idea and so meaningful. Thank you for arranging this — it will help a lot of children and adults too!”

The workshop highlights the Moorland Federation’s commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond academic outcomes, supporting children’s wellbeing, confidence and personal development alongside their literacy skills.

Naomi Philp, Executive Headteacher for the Federation said:

“It was wonderful to see pupils so engaged, not only in the story itself but in the deeper messages it shares. Experiences like this help children to develop a love of reading while also giving them the tools to understand themselves and navigate the world around them.”
